AT THE CROSSROADS

May 19, 2016 marked the 100th anniversary of the referendum that eventually renamed the City of Berlin to Kitchener, Ontario. It was a tumultuous time when Canada and its allies were focused on defeating the Kaiser and his Huns. Many local manufacturers felt that “Made in Berlin” was not good for business while there were those of German descent who considered the 62 year old name part of their heritage.

The one-act play “AT THE CROSSROADS” combines a fictitious “who-done-it” storyline with a very real and contentious period in Berlin’s history. It follows the murder investigation of a prominent member of the Village of Crossroads and pro “name change” supporter. The prime suspect is a person of German heritage who is dead against changing Berlin’s name. To solve the crime, Berlin’s leading investigator, Detective Dickson, is called in to sift through the facts and expose the perpetrator.

SEAGRAM'S FOLLY - THE FINAL CLUE

The year is 1891. When the Joseph E. Seagram family of Waterloo is faced with a horse racing incident that could lead to scandal, Detective Dickson of the nearby Berlin Police Department is sent in to solve it. The race is on when the Seagrams hire Nigel Aloysius Stout, an ambitious, young private detective from Toronto, who challenges and taunts Dickson at every twist and turn. If this is not enough, Dickson also has to contend with his ever-precocious niece, Miss Isabel Bruce, who's bent of being a detective like her favourite uncle. All this and a race horse mystery that stretches from the Seagram's stables at Bratton House to the royal mews of the Queen of England. It's Stout versus Dickson in a race to the finish line where wits and deductive reasoning are pushed to the limits.

SECRET AT WOODSIDE

Taking place in 1891 Berlin, Ontario, "Secret At Woodside" celebrates Canada's 150th with an intriguing tale of of someone who vanishes during a social evening at Woodside, the home of John and Isabel King. With the help of 16 year old Mackenzie King, Detective Dickson follows the clues like a Victorian cobweb party until the last puzzle piece falls into place.
Mackenzie King always pointed to his boyhood experience in Berlin, Ontario (Kitchener today) and life at Woodside as to where the foundation for his future as Canada's longest serving Prime Minister was formed. Growing up with Germans and Mennonites had a profound effect on his ability to address Canada's multi-cultural differences in a time when the Great Depression and World War II had torn away at its very fabric.
